The Horse Marines, formally, Marine Corps of the Republic of Texas, were a volunteer Texas Ranger group formed in 1836 and disbanded in 1844. Howwever long after some marines from Texas, like Terwilgger thought themselves as horse marines. The book deals with his service in the marines in the late 19h century and is notable for Terwilgger's account of the Boxer Rebellion. During the plunder of the Chinese capital his life was saved by a stolen relic when a mortar shell which exploded harmlessly against a large ornamental cage he was carrying.

Mentioned in the first episode of Season 9 of Perry Mason.
