VE Day 1945: As victory bells ring out across the country, war bride Ellie Burgess’ happiness is overshadowed by grief. Her charismatic Newfoundlander husband Thomas is still missing in action.

Until a letter arrives explaining Thomas is back at home on the other side of the Atlantic recovering from his injuries.

Travelling to a distant country to live with a man she barely knows is the bravest thing Ellie has ever had to do. But nothing can prepare her for the harsh realities of her new home…

September 11th 2001: Sophie Parry is on a plane to New York on the most tragic day in the city’s history. While the world watches the news in horror, Sophie’s flight is rerouted to a tiny town in Newfoundland and she is forced to seek refuge with her estranged aunt Ellie.

Determined to discover what it was that forced her family apart all those years ago, newfound secrets may change her life forever…

I rarely feel unsure how to review a book. This is one of them.
While it was an easy read, there were more thnigs which didn't appeal to me.
At first - four timelines! This got rather confusing in the beginning. I always had to check the date to know where we are now.
Secondly, one timeline is 9/11! the air plane gets diverted to Newfoundland and the story continues there. And for the whole time there is NO mentioning of the disaster which took place in NY and the other places. People don't talk about it, discuss it, are shocked... nothing. Only once when Sophie calls the office about her interview there are some hints, but just because the office is close to the place.
When I think about how we here in Germany talked constantly about it, were shocked and afraid.. This not-mentioning it felt very strange.
Third: I didn't like Sophie at all. Self-centred, only about making money -be it in 2001 or in 2011.
Emmet was really weird as well ..
And we don't really learn why Dottie behaved like that... and what's this about marrying George?

And then the end - oh my... as if the author wanted to add all the things possible.. That was way too much!! Pity I can't write more without spoilers..

So - my conclusion: while it was easy to read it was a more or less nondescript story..

This arrived here safely, first stop in a ring (or ray?). Thanks so much for sending - it arrived on Tuesday but a mini-kerfuffle delayed journalling. Now all is fine. All the best!

This is here as a bookcrossing ring. Initially I was a bit irritated by yet another book to-ing and fro-ing in time, but gradually it made sense.
I appreciated learning about the aspect of 9/11 covered here - I had heard about the flights being diverted and landing there but never thought more of it. Likewise there was a lot about Newfoundland to discover.
I also very much enjoyed Chinn’s writing. For example: “Love is a hungry thing. If you don’t feed it, it withers and dies. Ours died.”
(possible spoilers below?)
One aspect I struggled with greatly was Dottie’s attitude and interference. I never felt it was fully explained - the childhood guilt didn’t begin to cover it for me and her viciousness seemed over the top.
Despite gnashing my teeth at Dottie, and preliminary annoyance, I ended up really enjoying this one.
This heads over the Atlantic after me - hopefully not diverted to Newfoundland!

The English Wife has arrived safely in sunny California. It looks like I'm the last person in this ray, so I'll offer it again in the forums when I've finished. Thank you both for sharing!
