I got this board-book from an online seller. It's a "not-so-quiet" counting book, in which various creatures from Irish lore are interrupted by the banshee's signature shrieks. (In the legends, the banshee or bean sídhe is a spirit that's attached to a particular family line, and will wail or shriek to herald the approaching death of a family member. In this book nobody's being sung to their doom!)

There's an actual story as well as the counting, as we see when we get from 1 little banshee to 2 round ghosts; the ghosts are irked by the banshee's wail, "and together they plead: 'Hush now, Banshee! We're trying to read!'"

The banshee, whose wails are mainly greetings - "hi" or "hiya", etc. - only delivered in the banshee's top-range noise levels, keeps interrupting various beings at their work or play, can't figure out why everyone's so cranky, and wanders off, upset. But the creatures find her and tell her "we want to be your friend, but you're way too loud!" - and then they all have a go at counting down QUIETLY. (Let's just say that banshee's quiet-time is... a work in progress!)

I left this book in the Little Free Library; hope someone enjoys it!

We got this from our neighborhood Little Free Library to enjoy with our three month old, and it has quickly become one of our favorites!
