'Murder is the most grave of crimes, and of all its methods, poisoning is the most odious. It is a silent killer, a vile deceit that creeps up stealthily on its oblivious victim.'
Autumn, 1615. Frances Carr is imprisoned in a cold, lightless room. She is accused of murder. In a cell nearby is her co-accused — her husband Robert.
The Poison Bed is a work of fiction but based on the true story of Frances Carr who confessed to the murder of Sir Thomas Overbury and was subsequently convicted along with her husband. It was a scandal that rocked the Jacobean court and was one of the initial cracks that would eventually lead to the end of the Stuart monarchy.
The novel A Net For Small Fishes (you can read my review at https://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/16634503)
recalls the same events and for this reason, having read that book so recently, I initially felt a little disappointed. However The Poison Bed is not a carbon copy of the former or vice versa, coming from the perspective of Frances and Robert, rather than Frances and her friend Anne. And while I had much sympathy for Frances and Anne on first reading about them, I had much less on reading The Poison Bed.
