I got this book at a local charity shop. As one might guess, it's inspired by the barely-mentioned character from Melville's classic Moby-Dick, and turns her from the faithful wife left alone in port while her increasingly-obsessed husband hunts the white whale into a woman with considerably more life-experience than Melville might have credited. (The book features atmospheric illustrations by Christopher Wormell.)
I was curious about the novel, and found bits of it intriguing and some of the writing quite lyrical - but, overall, Una seemed a bit too good to be quite believable. Oh, I've read enough history of the period to know that there were indeed women who did the things she does - including masquerading as a youth to get on a ship - but for one woman to do ALL of those things was pushing it a bit {wry grin}.
