This tale of secrets and love and family and the various shapes and forms it can take is narrated by the eponymous Evie Hamilton who can be very annoying at times. I couldn't always summon any sympathy for her thoughts, words and deeds but my dislike of her was never strong enough to stop me wanting to know how it would all turn out . . .
