This is one of the books I acquired from the charity donations table while enjoying festive hot chocolate and chocolate cake on the Old Station at Richmond yesterday.

A rather harrowing yet satisfactory war story with love and betrayal at it's heart, that's not easy to read but well worth the effort.
Alternate chapters are narrated by Christa and Estelle, daughters of a WW1 resistance fighter and one of the British servicemen she helped to escape from Belgium. Christa spends the summer of 1939 on the Belgian farm, meeting Estelle's family, including her two brothers - and then war comes again . . . and the younger generation are involved in the fighting and the resistance . . .
