Thank you for this tag Edwardstreet, lots of good reviews about this book so I look forward to reading it. It was great to see you on my side of the ditch today!

Very much enjoyed this sequel to The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, although no need to read the first book as the story unfolds nicely on it’s own.
I loved the way the story was told by Gretel in alternating chapters looking back from 2022 and her 91 year old perspective, as well as moving forward through the years from 1946 when she and her mother fled to Paris.

A sequel to the Boy in the striped pajamas. It takes place over two timelines, the present in London 2022, and after World War 2, 1946 through to the early 1950’s. Gretel Fernsby is 91 years and has lived in the same apartment block in London for decades. She leads a quiet, comfortable life, and she does not talk about her disturbing past. She does not talk about her escape from Germany after the war, her post-war life in France with her mother, and most of all she does not speak about her father who was the commandant of one of the most notorious Nazi concentration camps. Then a young family move into the apartment below her, and she begins a friendship with their 9 year old son, Henry. One night she witnesses an argument between his father and mother and Henry. Gretel is faced with a chance to expiate her guilt and act to save a young boy for the second time in her life. This is a poignant, but devastating story about a woman who must confront her terrible past. Enjoyed this book and will pass onto my daughter to read.
