A girl with a gun fights for survival in the American wilderness, in a tale that will enthral fans of The Hunger Games and True Grit.

After the violent death of her father, in which she is complicit, Margo takes to the Stark River in her boat, with only a few supplies and a biography of Annie Oakley, in search of her vanished mother.

But the river, Margo’s childhood paradise, is a dangerous place for a young woman travelling alone, and she must be strong to survive, using her knowledge of the natural world and her ability to look unsparingly into the hearts of those around her. Her river odyssey through rural Michigan becomes a defining journey, one that leads her beyond self-preservation and to deciding what price she is willing to pay for her choices.

This was an interesting read. Margo is a very complex character, and I had to keep reminding myself just how young she is throughout the novel. She has a very different life to anybody I know! It was fascinating to read how in some ways she is very capable of looking after herself by living off the land, while in other ways makes some very poor choices in terms of her interactions with people. I really liked her relationships with Smoke and Fishbone. It gave me some hope after parts of the book being pretty bleak. Thanks for sending me this one, will probably save it for a bookbox or meet-up.

Hmm, no - sadly this book was just not for me ! I can see the comparison with " Hunger Games" which I read and also did not like very much.i just didn't engage with the characters and perhaps I just wasn't the right target audience so afraid to say I gave up on it.
