The story concerns an unhappy 24-year-old woman named Eileen who works as a secretary at a prison, and what happens to her during a bitter Massachusetts winter in 1964.
I only got around page 60 and had to abandon this Eileen who is one horrible person. A selfish, navel-gazing, filthy, insecure, cruel, self-loathing, shoplifting, sick and sorry spinster, hapless, joyless and boyless (still a virgin at 30). The few traces of humour evaporate in depression and boredom, I just couldn't find any access to this "heroine".
It's said to be a thriller, who knows; so far I found it rather a psychopathological study of a family decline. If you like to wallow in depression: that's the book for you.
