Although the content was fairly interesting, this book was sloppily written.

The book could have benefitted from an introductory chapter for those of us who know nothing about octopuses. Instead, without preamble, the writer launched into detail about such topics as octopus behaviour, without first providing any basic information about their anatomy, diet, lifestyle etc.

There were also a distractingly large number of errors in the book. As just one example, Courage writes that the optic glands of a mother octopus "release an endocrine that cues the cascade of biochemical changes..." An endocrine? Perhaps she means a hormone? Call me a purist, but I believe writers should refrain from using words if they don't understand the meaning of those words. On another page, Courage describes a researcher "pouring over satellite images". Surely, she means "poring"? This sort of sloppiness would have been missed by a computerizer spellchecker but could have been corrected by a good human proofreader.

Finally, the book felt rather aimless to me. It meandered from topic to topic with no discernable narrative arc nor thesis, which made it difficult for me to know what material to focus on, and made it unsatisfying to read.

I won't look for more from this author.
