the last novel of a screen-writer (who was born on the same day as I, at 29 September)

I've never met a hero who in spite of being the biggest asshole ever succeeded in keeping the reader in line to the end. Saul Doc Karoo is a fat, hypochondriac, alcoholic movie script editor who lives in New York. His job is to fix film scripts, often at the cost of the writer's originality, to ensure a movie sells well. Because he is good at his job, he is rich and famous and oh so smug and cocksure, the words self-restraint or responsibility don't exist in his dictionary. I wanted to kick that Karoo's ass after the first ten pages.
However he has something vulnerable, even charming and mesmerizing, as I said, I followed this fat egomaniac until the end. His downfall, when he thinks he can make a movie script of his own life and play with his family's fate, is abrupt and very tragic.
