Despite some of the descriptions of this very different society being quite alien I found this strangely compelling. The narrator is a woman over 70 who works in a nursing home looking after a dementia patient. She struggles financially and is constantly being asked for money by her daughter. All she wants for her daughter is for her to marry and have a secure job, with a safe future where she won't end up dying alone. However her daughter has a long-term female partner. Korean society seems very backwards in this way but I'm sure there are still many people elsewhere whose parents can't accept their sexuality and fear for their future being 'different'. There are also some really shocking descriptions of lack of care of the elderly which I'm sure are also echoed elsewhere. An insightful read and the gradual shift in the relationship of the mother both with her patient, and her daughter and daughter's partner, and the way these are somehow linked together, is well told.
