quite liked this, and if I hadn't previously read the author's Witchmark trilogy, I might have rated this higher. But I Loved that trilogy so much, and it's Edwardian society with magic world building was so great, that I was a bit underwhelmed by this one. Midnight Bargain's take on Regency romance tropes was fun, with some interesting magical rules and societal pressures. And I did enjoy seeing the author wade into some more traditional Romance trappings, and then pepper it with excellent social commentary and complicated critiques, etc. My heart just didn't get attached to any of these characters. But the search for self actualization and meaning in such a constrictive society was really interesting. And I liked the way the magical rules of this world were revealed, and the different cultural and societal approaches to gender roles. Always appreciate meeting characters who find new ways to punch out of the boxes others want to keep them in. And this still offers some happier easier endings (not that it's easy, per se) than the Witchmark series.
