I received this as a gift from Travelina, when I won a raffle in the Virtual BC Con.

Thank you for the introduction to this famous fantasy from Norway. Hirka is an orphan, with an adopted father who protects her secret from the world - in Ym, a realm where everyone has a tail, she is an outsider. However, with her coming-of-age rite looming close, his protection may not be enough, for the secret will soon be out that she is a hollow, unable to bind with the earth, and she must run for her life.

The story is slow moving in the beginning, as the world building happens, but then things begin to speed up and take on a breath-taking pace. Nonetheless, this is a trilogy and there are things not explained or wrapped up by the end of this volume. I don't still quite know what's so bad about being an Odin's Child. I presume in the next volume Hirka will enter our world - a world where nobody has tails.

There'a also a bit of YA romance in it, with the typical YA male interest, though Hirka herself develops into a strong character after what she has gone through.

And lastly, the cover - I had always assume the cover object to be a whip, and realization only dawneds when I saw an image of the original Norwegian cover. American publisher, rightly understanding how delicate and sensitive the Americans are, hides part of the cover inside, but there it is, reminding me very much of the meat counter.

Adding this to the Around the World Bookbox.
