I picked up this book at an expat book exchange to raise donations for the tsunami that recently happened in South East Asia. I recalled the the movie as intriguing but only have sorted memories of it from when I was a kid. (Mom and Dad set me free to watch films of all maturity levels and I ended up working in them - let that be a lesson to you all!)

From the start I was absorbed since I have been out of touch with classic films since I left the states and I loved the intricate descriptions of black and whites. The first film held me because I knew I had seen it, and just as he's getting to the end I realized it was the cult classic Cat People! That hooked me line and sinker.

I am also helping out with politcal documentary screenings at a local coffee shop and am disturbed by the dark side of the sacrifice one makes for standing up against the government. I love the relationship between the men and the suffering of each in his own way.

I also don't mind imagining Raul Julia as Valetin. He was so hot. And was aging beautifully when he passed. Such a sad loss of incredible talent.

Not so much into the Gay psychology footnotes. They seem so outdated and only interesting on a historical mindset kind of way. Besides, they break up the drama at times. I read them anyway.

I am heading down to the Philippines as I finish. The book should end up somewhere on Palawan island if you're looking.
