“It’s Christmas Eve, the final night of Los Posadas, a centuries-old Spanish tradition in which the community acts out the story of the birth of Jesus. As Carlos Castillo lights the farolito, the tin and glass lantern that will guide the pilgrims to his door, he hopes that Mama, Papa, and Grandfather will get home soon. His grandfather always sing the traditional words of the innkeeper, who at first refuses shelter to Mary and Joseph and then finally allows them to enter. But when Grandfather arrives too late, Carlos must sing the words all by himself—and take part in the celebration in a new and exciting way.” (Summary from back of book)

This is a charming and sweet book about the Christmas traditions in some Latin American communities. My friends who were Latine did not originate in the communities with the traditions of Las Posadas, so it was cool to see a new facet of the holiday as it is celebrated in different places. The author writes an informative essay in the back that gives greater detail of the holiday and its significance. I’m saving this to send to someone for Holiday Gift Giving, as it’s a lovely thing to have during the holidays.
