The village of Worsted is staging Hippolytus under the aegis of the indefatigable Mrs. Palmer. Given this background, it seems inevitable that the most absurd romances should bloom, as indeed they do. Thirkell's novels provide a scrutiny of British manners in the most entertaining doses.
In August Folly, the village of Worsted is staging Hippolytus. Inevitably, the most absurd romances bloom. Boorish young Richard Tebbins, just down from Oxford, falls in love with Mrs. Dean, mother of nine, whose oldest son loves Richard's sister, but she loves another. And round and round it goes. Amidst a series of comic catastrophes, everyone manages to redeem themselves.
Witty, snobbish, sweet, and evocative, Mrs. Thirkell's Barsetshire novels provide a bemused scrutiny of British manners in the most delightfully entertaining doses.
I found this book on the discount shelves of a local used book store.

I am buying books from the outside shelves at The Readers Corner (a Raleigh used book store) and releasing them. This is one of those books. If you like it, take it and write a journal entry at www.BookCrossing.com - its easy and anonymous. Then when you are done with it, find a nice person or place to release it. I look forward to reading your thoughts on this book and finding out where you got it from. This book is on an adventure we can share with it.
