Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith - Good

I kept putting this one off. I'd skimmed the first chapter and wasn't sure how well I would cope with the 'stalker-ish' vibe. That's the sort of thing that can give me nightmares, especially during hot weather when I'm forced to sleep with the window open (normally shut and locked!).

Various book group people persuaded me that it wasn't gratuitous and so I gave it a whirl. So glad I did. It's a great page turner and the best to date from JK Rowling in her alterego role.

Someone from Cormoran Strike's past is holding a grudge...to the extent that he's stalking Robin and goes to the extreme of murdering a girl, dismembering her and sending a leg by courier to her. The problem is, there are too many possible suspects in Strike's past!

The police have one man firmly in the frame, but Strike is pretty convinced it's not him. He has three others in mind and with Robin they begin the task of tracking each of them down. The more they find out, the more they all still look like the prime suspect. So much so, that I was convinced part way through which it was, only to be disproved right at the end... the denoument of which had me actually shout an expletive into mid-air! Good job I wasn't out in public!!!

The only thing that marred the book for me is the 'will they, won't they' dynamic between Strike and Robin. I do wish the author would drop that aspect of it. They are work partners, anything else would be totally inappropriate in a two person business and would ruin their working relationship completely. Hopefully future books will dial that down and put things back to a profesional relationship. If I wanted to read romance, I'd buy chicklit.

Otherwise a great read. Only thing now is....do I watch the tv adaptation when it starts next month. Hmm.
