This hardcover (c. 2005) is just one book from a donation of five full grocery bags of books (over 90 of them!) from my two-doors-down neighbor. Thank you for such a kind and generous donation!

I've read a couple of the later Lincoln Lawyer novels, and I have seen the "Lincoln Lawyer" movie, so I've been hoping to read this book.

I have watched the Matthew McConaughey movie based on this book a couple of times, so I was familiar with the story and the plot twists before I picked up the book. But as is typically the case, the book was better than the movie. In this case, what makes it better are all the details about how a defense attorney approaches the job, so much of which is mental and doesn't convey well onto film. The attention to detail that Connolly has so successfully used to bring Harry Bosch to life serves equally well in the creation of Mickey Haller. While I have read other books with this character, this was the first Haller book, where Connolly first introduced us to the character, and it is an excellent story.

Mickey finds himself with a franchise case--a potentially high profile crime involving a wealthy client who can afford to pay to fight the charges brought against him all the way. This is a case that can help Haller pay his bills for a long time, and it will elevate his profile, and a successful defense of his client will help him find even more work. But when he discovers that his client may have been responsible for a killing that someone else is doing time for because of Mickey's representation, Haller finds himself trapped in a deep conflict between wanting to do right by his wrongly incarcerated client and the requirements to protect his current client and attorney-client privilege.

This is an exciting story, with a number of potentially unexpected twists (unless you've seen the movie, of course). But it is also a thoughtful exploration of the responsibilities of defense lawyers and the challenges they face in representing their clients, especially those who are truly innocent.
