The absolutely incredible story of a group of prisoners doing hard labour in Siberia, their plan to escape, and their amazing hike to freedom through some of the toughest terrain in the world. Rawicz was in the Polish army in 1939 when he was arrested by the Russians, and I found the first part of the book a difficult read with the horrific way he was treated. A young man sentenced to 25 years, he knew that he would be unlikely to survive in the camps, and with a group of friends and some unexpected help he made it through the defences and started on a walk of thousands of miles, carrying extremely little in the way of equipment. Although this is a true story I do wonder whether parts have been exaggerated in the telling before being committed to paper - could they really survive with no water for 12 days in the Gobi desert? Nevertheless it's an extremely interesting read, with the descriptions of the harsh conditions, the fantastic ingenuity of the group, and the political history of the time. I am in awe of their courage to even attempt it.
