An absolutely beautiful story that follows a family during the conflict between Japan and China (1937-1945) all the way to the present day as it spans several generations. Meilin and her son Rensu flee to safety across mainland China as they evade the Japanese bombers. Eventually settling in Taiwan and America the story shows how even when you move many thousands of miles to a new country its impossible to avoid your past.

Even as Renshu settles into his new life, Americanizes his name, starts a family, and becomes a citizen he can never forget where he came from even as he refuses to talk about the events of his past. Renshu is constantly looking over his shoulder afraid that he will say or do something that will have repercussions for the family he left behind in China.

Peach blossoms signify Spring and rebirth and also refer to a folktale which I'm not going to spoil (read the book you won't regret it) that has a major impact on Renshu's life. The author explores themes of belonging and generational trauma. She says she was motived to write this story to explore her own heritage and although the story is fiction some of the elements are based on her own father's stories.
