"Anikwa and James, twelve years old in 1812, spend their days fishing, trapping, and exploring the forest surrounding Kekionga and Fort Wayne in the Indiana Territory. To Anikwa and his family, members of the Miami tribe, this land has been home for centuries. James's father is a trader, and his family has ties to the Miami community as well as to the new settlers and soldiers who arrive each day to claim this territory as their own.

Now as the British and American armies prepare to meet at Fort Wayne in a crucial battle for control of the land, Native Americans from surrounding tribes water in Kekionga to protect their own claims to the region. Soon the Americans close the trading post and withhold precious commodities, including salt, from the Miamis. When the fort comes under siege and war ravages the land, James and Anikwa must decide where their deepest loyalties lie. Can their families--and their friendship--survive?

Helen Frost's carefully crafted novel in poems examines what friendship and home mean in a time when war threatens everything." (summary from book jacket)

*******

This is a very gripping story, and the ending is somewhat ambiguous. I liked it a lot.
