I got this softcover from a local Savers thrift shop. I've read a great many accounts of polar explorations and tragedies, but this one was new to me: in 1743, four survivors of a Russian shipwreck in the Arctic Ocean managed to survive on a remote island with minimal supplies for SIX YEARS. How it happened, how they were found, how they managed all that time - and why the story took so long to reach the outside world - make up this book, along with the author's attempts to visit the scenes of the disaster and perhaps find lingering evidence. [In the remote Arctic, artifacts can remain where they fell for a very long time - though it may be increasingly difficult to spot them in the ice and rock.]
