I got this hardcover at Barnes and Noble, intrigued by the concept: it uses the 3-part-pages concept from "build your own animal/character" children's books, only to create ghost stories with a variety of illustrations. (Not sure how effective it will be; the midsection of a vampire on the tail of a mermaid and with the head of a mummy might look more like an accident in a costume shop than anything actually scary. Still, it sounded fun.)

Later: I did enjoy paging through the book, not least to spot the influences of the various sources listed up front - which include many classic horror stories as well as some plays, poems, movies, and even nursery rhymes. And the illustrations for each of the author's own stories were quite stunning, with some marvelous details: the unnamed but clearly meant to be Marie Antoinette has a ghostly presence with severed head, a piece of cake in one hand - and a pile of other heads around her feet.

There's a stringy-haired ghost girl, a very creepy mummy, a bored-looking James-Dean type, a gangster, various monsters... the list goes on. The 3-part stories associated with each image were clearly inspired by classic and/or pop-culture sources but are phrased as stand-alone tales that can be swapped out as you flip the various sub-pages - but this means they usually seem a bit mild.

As for the mix-and-match images, I found that some of them worked remarkably well, but most did not. If I stuck to similar costume-styles and/or similar color palettes I got results that pleased me more than randomly mixing and matching. But it did amuse me for a while, and so I consider it a success.

Looking forward to reading some of the ghost stories around the fireplace or as we are all snuggled in for the night. Thanks Gory Details for sharing it.
