A novel with a harrowing story of the Holocaust. I was very lucky, as I had a deadline to make with this book, (Book Club Summer Read) and when I walked in to BMV, THERE it was! One copy, used, just $6.99!
Good old BMV, much more fun (and much cheaper!) than Indigo across the road. (Yonge and Eglinton in Toronto.)
As for the book: You are hooked after the first few pages but you will be crying buckets later on.
Like Michael Ondaatje, the writer goes back and forth from today (main character Julia) to the Vichy Government of France (main character, Sarah). I did not know much about France and how Jews were treated in that country during WW2 - this book is very educational.
"....conveys Julia's conflicting loyalties, and makes Sarah's trials so riveting, her innocence so absorbing, that the book is hard to put down" Publisher's Weekly
