from the back of the book:

Tom Perrotta's thirtyish parents of young children are a varied and surprising bunch. There's Todd, the handsome stay-at-home dad, dubbed "The Prom King" by the moms at the playground, and his wife Kathy, a documentary filmmaker envious of the connection Todd has forged with her toddler son. And there's Sarah, a lapsed feminist surprised to find she's become a typical wife in a traditional marriage, and her husband, Richard, who is becoming ore and more involved with an Internet fantasy life than with his own wife and child.

These parents raise their kinds in the kind of quiet suburb where nothing ever seems to happen - until one eventful summer, when a convicted child molester moves back into town, and two parents begin an affair that goes further that either of them could have imagined.

The books begins with just another boring day in the life of stay-at-home mom, Sarah. Then one day, she meets Todd, a stay-at-home dad. While the novel is about the two of them and their relationship, Tom Perrotta seamlessly weaves in other sub-characters and their storylines to give Todd and Sarah's characters depth and make them more interesting.

There is not a climatic ending to this book, but the ending is very fitting for both Todd and Sarah. Two people who seemed to be lost in their own lives (at the beginning of the book), decide to make a bold move. Both make their individual decisions in the same way which they have approached all other decisions they have made in their lives up to this point.

As I was nearing the end of the book, I was wondering how the story was going to wrap itself up. The story (and all the sub-plots) didn't seem to be headed in a particular direction to give the book a conclusion. I found the ending anti-climatic, but it was very fitting for all characters involved.

On a side-note, I also found I enjoyed Tom Perrotta's style of writing, especially how he weaves in multiple minor characters with sub-plots which impacted the main storyline. I will be looking for more books written by him.

Received from aberpeter. Thanks so much!

I thought that there were two many characters to follow along with in this book. I ended up reading the plot summary instead of finishing the whole thing.
