I got this softcover at a local Savers thrift shop. It's from a series about Princess Magnolia, who performs her royal duties garbed in princess-pink gowns and with perfect grace. But she has a secret identity: when the monsters attack, she changes into The Princess In Black, and rides out on her pony Blacky (who has a sparkly-unicorn disguise of his own for when he's Princess Magnolia's mount). There's more suspense here from the nosy Duchess snooping for secrets than from the actual monsters - though the one that almost devours a couple of goats must have been pretty scary to Duff the goat-boy (and to the goats themselves!). Our princess saves the day in more ways than one, and inspires Duff to consider coming up with his own secret identity with which to defend his beloved goats and fight monsters. Great fun!

[Fans of the Princess in Black might also enjoy Ursula Vernon's Hamster Princess, another fun series with a kick-ass princess who'd rather go adventuring than sit around the castle!]
