In many ways, this book reminded me of "Sweet Thursday" by John Steinbeck, which I read only a few weeks ago. It is set in the same kind of small run-down Californian coastal town, with the same kind of cast of slightly unusual characters (the blurb-writers would no doubt characterise them as "wacky" and "oddball"). There is even a biologist in each who makes money selling specimens to local universities. Even the gentle mocking style of comedy is quite similar, albeit a little less subtle in this instance. And there are also similarities in the plot, which I won't go into here. I preferred Sweet Thursday, but this is nonetheless worth reading. It'll only take you a day or two.
I also thought this book very similar to Sweet Thursday, but I read that ages ago, so it was fun to read something imilar again. It is a very nice book to read, and makes you feel happy-it is not one to think about too hard or worry about! I did like the cover design, which goes very well with the book. The charactes were easy to see in my head, especially the main character, Myrthis, who is very sympathetic.
picked up at the english meetup. it says "funniest novel of the year" and my first reaction was, "yeah? what year is that?" :-)
