Sue Lynn Tan's debut is wonderful. A beautifully written tale of a young woman who sets out to save her mother and in the process also finds herself - along with friendship, adventure, near-death experiences, and not one but two love interests.
There is a lot of story covered in Tan's book and it's, frankly, a little exhausting at times, which might explain why I put this down twice over the course of reading it. I do love Xingyin's adventures and her coming-of-age story, from sheltered young woman to fierce warrior, set to the backdrop of a mystical world.
The final 150 pages are particularly wonderful; crammed full of twists and adventure, and the final act moves at a very brisk pace. Also thrilled that while is a duology, it ends in a satisfying way that doesn't absolutely require reading the second book though I am curious to see what becomes of Xingyin next and whether she ends up with the Celestial or Demon Prince. You just know there will be a showdown!

As much as I loved him, I loved myself more.
I had been lauded for my bravery, yet I knew the truth - that I had done these things despite my fear.
