Really interesting way of looking at the history of an area and intertwining it with the personal. I liked the conclusion.

Picked up at the London meet-up. This looks like it will be right up my street.

Written as part of the grieving process after the death of her sculptor father, Bunting explores his life and the history of England, specifically focussed on an acre of land that he owned and built a chapel on at Scotch Corner. Bunting explores how over centuries the North Yorkshire moors have been a place to escape from the rest of the world, and how her father's flight there from the expansion and loss of culture in north London follows in the footsteps of many from the monks of Byland onwards. Her relationship with her father was troubled and her childhood memories of the Plot are not good, but she gradually develops an understanding of what drove him, even as she sees that he may not have fully understood the how the changes benefited the poor or the true situation of the Yorkshire farmers. This is a really really interesting and thought-provoking book and is making me evaluate some of my own opinions.
