This book is set in Communist China c. 1970. Primarily about 3 educated young men (teenagers) sent to a
re-education/hard labor camp in a moutain village. Books are being banned and burned. It's illegal to be in possession of any book not scantioned by the Communist regime. All these young men want to do is to be free to read a European classic... these young men are willing to die to get hold of a good book... and to be in love...

The writing is vivid, beautiful, sometimes brutal. U can see and feel the characters and their surroundings both natural, political/social.

Note to self, must re-read "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury.

Zippy asked me to paas this book along to KateKintail at the next meet-up, since she cannot attend. I am setting it in the stack of meet-up books for that purpose.

Since it seems I forgot to add my past review when I registered this book, here is what I thought of it in 2016
This was a surprisingly quick and engaging read. The friend who passed this book along to me is known for her love of depressing literature, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Certainly the grim circumstances of China's Cultural Revolution, where education and talent were punished with no gains for society or the country is not a pleasant subject, but the story was not terribly depressing. It shows the power of ideas and literature to broaden the mind and enliven the soul, even in the worst circumstances. I loved the importance of stories in this small community where the boys labored and how the love of ideas was a powerful for them as Luo's love for the Little Seamstress.

Brought this home from a BCinDC meetup because it sounded great, and I wanted to read it. I've actually since earread it on audio from the library, so I'll move this on to a new home (probably at our next in-person meetup) after taking a photo of it with my book-loving teddy bear who helps me catalog my reads :-)
