Registered late -read in Sept of 2021. This is ARC.

When you are up to 53 in a series, you must be doing something right and, by damn, Robb hits all the marks again in this one. Her ability to bring fresh perspectives to each novel makes her books new and exciting. This time Eve is called to a murder of a homeless woman who was known to some of the construction personnel for her habit of writing down 'infractions' as well as handing out small origami flowers and animals. This leads to a lot more as her death brings up issues at the construction site and issues from Eve's past. Just as Eve is ready to leave the rest of the scene to the sweepers and other investigators, a second murder is discovered nearby...this one, however, is decades old, but these two investigations may have a common thread and Eve is just the woman to track it down.

There are the usual cast of characters, but the main emphasis is on Eve and Roarke and Peabody. The others are there, but only brought in if it really makes sense in the context of the story. This was mostly Eve dealing with the murders and she was at her best going after the bad guys, playing them like a maestro, and getting them exactly where she wanted them. While one murderer was more-or-less a given, the other was a little better hidden and had a few twists and turns. It was a fun ride and I am definitely on board for #54.

Quote I loved:

Children are the light that cuts through any shadow.
