The guy grew round and soft,

a ball of cheesy delight
and then the running caught up to him.

ha ha I love The Oatmeal books. :)

He's a funny guy in a very kooky way and it's always so much fun to go through this book. Even when he's bring up serious topics or real situations and feelings, he manages to keep from removing that most fun part of his books.

This one is about his determination to get back into shape, the reality of running, and how it affected him physically. I especially like the part where he tackled that mountain and the bizarre non-sensical moment when he ran into a loan vending machine at the bottom of the mountain deep in the thick bamboo forest. He was greatful for it.... but like his readers, couldn't fathom how it even came to be here or who exactly it was supposed to be for. That's Japan for you though. XD

So as always, The Oatmeal books are a good time! ;)

Here's to another fun swap! ;)

The box arrived safely; many thanks for the trade! I'm not a long-distance runner (though I sometimes wish I'd given it a try), but I have enjoyed books about it, especially with a comedic component - see The Looniness of the Long Distance Runner.

Later: Very entertaining - and even includes some good advice here and there, not least the parts about finding hobbies/exercises/activities that you enjoy. (Also, cupcakes!) The bits about the Japanese Giant Hornets were great fun - and yes, I imagine trying to outrun humongous stinging-and-flying things would be great incentive for improving your speed. (Loved the panels in which Godzilla "nopes" out of the scene after spotting a hornet nest!) The parody advertisement for the "AssCore 9000" was also amusing. And I appreciated the mix of personal-issues-with-food-and-self-image vs. the many aspects of long-distance running, from harrowing accidents to moments of joy.

[There's a TV Tropes page on the "Oatmeal" webcomic, from which this book was taken.]

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

I left this book, bagged against the elements, at the surprisingly elaborate monument to the Westford Knight, inspired by markings on a glacial boulder that some interpret as a carving of a knight. (I don't believe that the markings are indications of knights in the New World, but the monument is really spectacular!) Hope the finder enjoys the book!
