A great book. The Alchemist can be read on many levels - whichever one you go for you're bound to enjoy it. It manages to be both a simple, easy to read story/interesting parable and a very thought provoking novel, packed with important messages.
So, an enlightening experience or just a good story -it's up to you to decide but it's bound to leave you feeling happy.

Picked up at last night's meet-up.
I didn't do too well with The Road Less Travelled - I'm hoping I'll be more receptive to this popular work of mystical self-help.

I enjoyed this. It's a simply-written (deceptively simply) parable, drawing on Christianity, Islam and alchemy to support the writer's ideas. Wise and uplifting. I liked the supporting cast of characters in Santiago's quest (the gypsy woman, the crystal merchant, the English scholar etc) - they're well-characterised from just a few phrases and some well-put dialogue.
If this reminded me of anything, it would be Jonathan Livingstone Seagull, another parable I read (and loved) years ago.
