Wayward Volume 1: String Theory

I got this softcover from an online seller. It's about a girl who's half-Japanese, half-Irish, and after her parents' divorce she's moving from Ireland to Tokyo. Cue the beginnings of some unexpected events - it seems she can sense magic, from trails pointing her way to actual beings from Japanese mythology...
The story and artwork blend accurate looks at modern-day urban Japan with the magic - and, yes, elaborate battle sequences - of mythology, with Rori picking up new allies and new foes as she tries to cope with her new powers. "She talks to cats; he eats ghosts; together they fight monsters!" Or... something like that {grin}.
Things get dark when we find that Rori's been self-harming as a way of coping with stress - and when a teacher tells her that she might want to dye her naturally-red hair to brown or black so as not to stand out. Culture clash indeed.
The mystical battles escalate - of course - and by the end of this volume Rori and her allies have taken some hits and have seen the rise of some very dangerous foes indeed.
[There's a TV Tropes page on the series, with some entertaining tidbits.]

I'm adding this book to the Bookbox with Legs (see its bookbox journal here). The box will be on its way to its next stop soon; hope someone enjoys the selection!
Thanks for sharing! Always enjoy your books in the bookboxes.
A fast-paced beginning of a series with beautiful artwork. The mysteries just keeps piling on and on, without much being explained.
I do enjoy reading about the monsters in the end section, so now I know that those aren't just random monsters but based on Japanese mythology.
