I picked this book up at a charity shop in my neighbouring city, Brantford. I have long known this title and its author's name, but I have never read the book or anything else by Willa Cather. I'm doing a 50 States reading challenge right now, and I didn't have a book slated for Nebraska, so when I read the summary on the back and saw the setting, I thought this would be a good opportunity to read an American classic for my challenge.
The cover of this book looks a little weird and I am not sure why/what happened to it-- maybe sun damage?-- but the book seems perfectly readable. I found a note from a previous reader inside, it says "A nice read/ Judy Maddiford/ Feb 2003." I hope I will agree with Judy's opinion!

There were things in/about this book that I didn't like, but overall I think I quite enjoyed it. I found Cather's style of writing very smooth and readable. I thought it was a little bit like the prairie itself-- sparse, stoic, seemingly plain... but beautiful and full of life.
Since finishing this book I've read a couple of different scholarly things about it-- analyses of the book/certain aspects thereof-- and it seems like, as with a lot of literary classics, there are some very different interpretations of it out there. I noticed two main ones and definitely know which side I find myself on.
This is the only Willa Cather book I've read, but I would definitely been open to reading more of her work. I am glad that I found and read this. It seems like she/her works were important to American literature, but not being American and not having studied American Lit or anything I haven't really been exposed to her up until now (though I've heard of her and her works many times on Jeopardy and somewhat in other American media, lol).

I found O Pioneers at a rest stop between London, On and Belleville, On. I had stopped to stretch my legs as I had just had a full hip replacement. Even though the book as written over a hundred years ago, I thourghly enjoyed it.
