I got this book from abs out of PokPok's virtual nonfiction bookbox (It's so virtual it doesn't even have a BCID: metavirtual). Thanks.
A mere 5.5 years later I've read it.
It was Frank Herbert, I think, who said in an interview that the trick of writing is to move from the general to the specific and back again. This book does this particularly well. Set in the decades after the abolishment of slavery, it tells both a human scale story with all of its attendant detail, from the intimate to the petty, and it is set in a time when major changes in USA society occurred, and Madam Walker was very much involved in shaping those changes. I can recommend this.
