Overall, I found this a fairly enjoyable read. There are some entertaining and fascinating stories as she recounts her travels around the world. I’ve been lucky enough to have visited several of the places she lived, so fun to compare my personal more recent experiences with her travels in the previous decades. As others have noted, the author can be occasionally irritating, and she sometimes makes some Very Broad Sweeping Pronouncements about the people she visits in her travels. I found her at her most insufferable in the beginning, especially during her travels in Mexico. She hides behind this weird semi-academic shield of “Field Anthropologist,” trying to take a “it’s not my place to interfere or to judge or to comment” tone. But at the same time, her stated goals are to be accepted into the communities and to participate fully, helping to make meals and share religious rights and shared family experiences. It doesn’t seem compatible to live Both of those ways, and so she ends up kind of failing at both. Plus, she does spend a lot of time judging, but then hides behind this convenient shield when faced with some hard truths (spousal abuse, for example). And at times she makes truly fool-hardy choices, and she was very lucky that things worked out. Her descriptions of meals are vibrant. Her time in Bali sounded truly life changing. I appreciated her newly found desire and then action towards being a world wanderer. Having studied Primatology, I was surprised and entertained to read about her interactions with the notoriously prickly Dr. Biruté Galdikas in Borneo.
