This was leftover at the end of the 2022 Gaithersburg Book Festival. I hope to continue its journey soon.
Though I doubt it'll follow the book's travels, inside this book I found a postcard from New York City, postmarked April 4, 1946. It's addressed to "Miss Ruth Schmidt, West Pittsburg, Pa. (Lawrence County)"
Amazing it ever arrived - now the Post Office gives up trying if you leave the last digit off the zip code.
Anyway, this is the text of the postcard:
"Hello;
We almost didn't have a place to hang our hats. We are staying in Staten Island, about 5-minute bus ride to the hospital. We are going into New York tomorrow and try for a room. I'm tired seeing cripples already. [signature illegible]"
