This little paperback came from the Friends of the Kaimuki Library. It includes drawings by Ruth Ohi.
Inspired by events in the author's own life: Naomi is a Japanese Canadian girl born in Vancouver in 1935. Her life is disrupted by something she doesn't really understand - war - and part of her family is soon living in an internment camp in Slocan, BC. They eventually wind up in Granton, Alberta.
This book is meant for younger readers, but it follows the same characters as Kogawa's well-known book for adults, Obasan. It's also been staged as an opera.
I'll count this as my Canada read for kiwiinengland's 666 for 2022 challenge and my BC read for my 2022-2023 Canadian Reading Challenge.

Thanks for the book! I was so excited to find this book (and another) at the post office today as it is my birthday! Perfect timing:)
I hate it when I lose the receipt/tracking number. It looks as if the package made it here in record time.

The story of a Japanese Canadian family and their internment during and after World War II, based on the author's childhood experiences. It was both sweet and sad at times.
