A very sweet collection of childhood memories from a small town in Cuba around the end of the WWII. Alma's family really sounds extraordinary for those times and place. She is a great story-teller and I already added the companion volume to this book "Where the Flame Trees Bloom" to my tbr. I'd also like to read some of her children books.

I am counting it for Cuba for the 666 Around the World Challenge for 2022.

I walked past the Little Free Library at the Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resource yesterday on my way to the bakery, and it was looking scant! (And then the bakery was closed :( ) So I came home, read the shortest book on my TBR, and will return for baked goods and drop this off this morning. Will try and get a few more books there before the holidays!

Nice stories, though simple. I worry that perhaps in her next book she takes them in a right-wing, intolerant way, as is common in Cuban-American politics. I didn't see that in this book, though I was always afraid it might be lurking.
