This book won the 2021 Women's Prize for Fiction and was nominated for a number of other awards. It astounded me with its creativity, and at the same time, it was a really suspenseful page turner.

I had read Clarke's earlier book Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, which I thought was wonderful but also quite challenging. Fortunately, this book is much shorter and more readable, so I thought it would be a good choice for the Favourite Book of 2021 roundabout.

Thanks for sending. I love the pretty cover. Though I know I should not judge a book by its cover, I am always attracted by pretty covers. I will start reading soon.

What an excellent pick for the roundabout! The first few chapters were a bit disorienting, but I quickly settled in. Then I just let the story carry me and enjoyed the ride. It was a fun read, very creative and very different. Thanks for sharing this one.

After being slightly underwhelmed by 'Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell', I wasn't exactly rushing to pick this one up, but WOW! What a novel. I loved it. Strange and fascinating and disturbing and appealing and just right up my street. I couldn't help but feel echoes of Gormenghast in The House's rooms, with their tides, statues and strange visitors. I'd love to read more stories set in this world, or find out what happens to the characters next, but somehow I don't think it would have the same appeal. It's all the mystery that made this such a good read.

Arrived safely.

A another new author for me. I was hoping a fantasy book would turn up at some point, it is my favourite genre. Looking forward to this.

Journal Entry 14 by Ythan at Ellon, Scotland United Kingdom on Monday, May 2, 2022
I got on really well with this book. There are sooooo many numbers in this book; halls, vestibules and journals. A bit disorientating in the beginning but once I got into it, it was a quick read. I'd like to see a picture of how The House looked in the author's imagination.

When I was reading this, I realised that Piranesi is being manipulated in a similar way to Jim Carrey's character in 'The Truman Show' but for a shorter time period and a lot less people are involved.

Journal Entry 17 by wingCross-patchwing at Leicester, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Friday, May 27, 2022
Excellent. I am so glad I didn’t read the blurb or any of the reviews, to allow the disorientation. It was a pleasure to lose oneself in the ebbs and flows of Piranesi’s mind. I too wondered if we were in a Truman Show. Great offering.

I'm so sorry, I have just found this down the side of my desk. It must have slipped off the huge pile of 'stuff'

Journal Entry 23 by wingearthcaroleannewing at Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear United Kingdom on Tuesday, August 23, 2022
At first I was not enjoying this book. I had to read every paragraph twice and I hated the random capitals. It's a slow book with a very slow start but once it got going I eventually enjoyed the ‘world-building’ which was beautiful in places and I loved the architectural descriptions. However, I couldn’t help feeling somewhat underwhelmed with it as a whole. There was no "reveal" as such which felt a little bit of a let-down and it leaves lots of questions unanswered.

Wow, this is an extraordinary book! The narrator is lost in a labyrinth, a house full of rooms of statues into which tides come. He keeps a journal in which he records his ever-growing knowledge of the house, and he does not remember living anywhere else. There is only one Other in the house, a man who arrives in a different outfit each time, who brings mysterious gifts, and expects Piranesi to help him in his quest for other knowledge. Totally different from anything I've read before, and strangely beautiful.

Received and really looking forward to reading this (after I finish my current, rather fat book).

Journal Entry 29 by grovalskii at Zehlendorf, Berlin Germany on Monday, October 10, 2022
I'm not sure about this book. The book is classified as fantasy, which I generally enjoy. But honestly I would not consider this fantasy. Maybe that's what threw me off. I was expecting something quite a bit different.
Like Ythan, I drew the connection with the Truman Show. To me, this is really quite a tragic story of messing up someone's life - even if the main character would not consider his life messed up, I think.
I will have to think some more about this book before I can make up my mind if I liked it or not. :D I'm glad I got to read it, though.

This was something new! I am not big on fantasy, and the beginning was a bit confusing, but when I got deeper into the house and Piranesi's world, it was captivating till the end. There's so much beauty in it, and a mystery that gradually opens to the reader and Piranesi alike. What an imagination the writer has! Thank you for sending this in the roundabout, I might not have picked it otherwise.

Journal Entry 34 by wingFifnawing at Voorburg, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Friday, January 6, 2023
I have such mixed feelings about this book. Once I got over my annoyance at the Random Capitalisation and the endless numbers, I liked the setting and the descriptions and just going with the flow of Piranesi's mind.
Every now and then the cynic in me would pipe up and say, this isn't a fantasy novel, it's a different genre if you strip it down to the bare bones.
So I found myself going back and forth a lot, but ultimately I'd say I enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing, a great pick for the roundabout!

It was just an OK read for me. I got tired of the journal entries and I could not even make an image of the Eternal House in my head! I was not very sympathetic of the main character and there were so many elements missing to the plot that it left me indifferent.
Thanks for sharing all the same, mathgirl40.
