Wow, what a start to this year's roundabout. I have never heard of this book or this author, but I will definitely be looking out for her in the future.
I'm a huge fan of science fiction and dystopian novels, but this future doesn't feel that far away. A perfect example of the 'slow apocalypse' where the world doesn't end in a bang, but it a quiet whimper. For in this future, there are few wild animals left and only one flock of terns thought to still exist. The main story is set against their last migration, as a small fishing boat attempts to follow them - for some its a chance to find one last catch, one last haul of fish to make their fortune. But, for Franny, the journey is about a lot more - forgetting, redemption, freedom and a chance to keep her secrets forever.
This tugs at the heart strings on every single page. Whether you're an animal lover weeping over this denuded world or whether it's Franny herself, and her sad life, that gets to you. And I actually found it quite a hopeful book - the author doesn't give any answers or explanations, but the last chapter does lift the spirits and the determination that this can't come to pass.
Thanks for sharing this marvelous book.

When the book arrived I recognised the cover and the title, I think I read about it in a magazine, can't remember which one. I hadn't read this author before, so I didn't know what to expect.
The story was much more melancholy than I expected it to be, the further I went through the story, the more weepy I became. However, it was quick to read and I think the author balanced the transition from Franny's past and present very well.
I would read this author again but would prefer a more upbeat story next time.

Brilliant, just brilliant, and such a roller coaster emotionally. I can honestly say I would never in a month of Sundays have picked this book up to read, absolutely not! That is why I value this roundabout so much; it has so often taken me out of my comfort zone to my benefit. Thank you valpete.

The main protagonist is bent on following the birds in their migration in order to understand why and where they go, and eventually, decide upon what can be done to save them. Nearly all the wild animals on the planet have become extinct with only farm animals and pets existing. It is a complex plot to follow with mystery and suspense needing unravelled and I think I might have missed some of the messages in it. However, this future doesn’t feel that far away and it is scary.

Set in the near future, where mass migrations have wiped out most of the animals, Franny Stone is determined to track what could be the final ever migration of Arctic Terns. She persuades the crew of a fishing boat to take her, even though she knows her environmentalist husband would hate that they are people who take from the ocean. As the journey progresses we find out more about what is driving her - her passion for freedom, for the ocean, for birds, her troubled relationship with the husband she adores but can't stay with, her missing mother, her hard life with her grandmother. This is an absolutely beautiful book; I loved it.

This was a super interesting book, though I have to admit that I had a hard time understanding the main character. Her personality is so opposite to anything that I'm familiar with. I admire her husband who gave her the freedom she needed.
But beside that, the dystopian story was yet another wakeup call for me. I love that when reading books like this I almost feel like it's real, like the world around me already is in this situation. And then I realize that no, we are not there (yet) and should maybe take more care of our surrounding. Yeah, good choice for the roundabout, valpete! Thanks for sharing!
Off to the next reader!

This was a great book. Entertaining, interesting, very current re what's going on in the world and nature today even though it is fiction. Just the other day I read an article about the species of birds in Finland that have disappeared in the near past. I also liked how the writer joined the personal with the global.

I enjoyed this book - a glimpse of a future that doesn't seem that far away sadly. I didn't always really connect to the main character, but it was interesting to see revealed why she was truly on that ship, as well as the various crew members. I agree there is a hopeful note, and would have been happy for it to end before the epilogue actually.
Great choice for the roundabout - thanks for sharing!

A slow read, that I enjoyed to a certain degree. It was very original in that it combined a love story with a love for the environment. I did not fully like the main character but I found it overall very interesting and finished it in a short time.

I really enjoyed this book, which I found sad and moving but also quite gripping, as it has many elements of a thriller. It also offers a very timely and profound warning about our relationship to the environment. Thank you, valpete, for contributing this book to the roundabout.
