I don’t usually read dystopian novels but I got very into this. I liked the ways the narrative jumped back and forth and the connections between characters.

The usual elements of a post-apocalyptic novel, religious cults that threaten peaceful communities, starvation and loneliness that are constant pressures. However, for a book about the world’s collapse Mandel seems more interested in examining ideas around nostalgia, memory, and art than thrilling life or death jeopardy although these do belatedly make an appearance.

Most of Station Eleven’s characters remain good at heart and often reflect on old-world relics. They think about cars, planes, iPhones, computers, even high heels, but these contemplations also seem to suggest that Mandel is saying that there is a place for art in any new world order as there is in the old. There are some interesting ideas here but the lack of real blood-curdling menace meant that I found this a relatively quick and easy read but not a particularly gripping one.
