A fantastically gripping tale of a girl brought up in a Victorian baby farm, she is kept on and cared for by the woman in charge whilst thievery and fencing stolen goods goes on all around her, until the day that a proposition is put to her to be the accomplice of Gentleman in parting an heiress from her fortune. So off she goes to become a ladies' maid in a big house, where a young lady is kept at the whim of her uncle. Huge plot twists! I really enjoyed this though was slightly disturbed by some of the extremely dislikeable characters.

Found it on a bench outside St Albans Abbey. Brought it home with me to Australia.
