In the second installment of the Lemony Snicket series, the Baudelaires go to live with their Uncle Monty. Unlike their previous guardian, Count Olaf, Uncle Monty is clean and kind. Count Olaf shows up disguised as Uncle Monty's new assistant, and shortly thereafter, poor Uncle Monty is found dead. Stefano blames one of Uncle Monty's many snakes, but the children figure out how to prove it was Stefano - without any help from Mr. Poe, of course!
