This book will be continuing its journey!

Finally ready to start another round of the Biographies of Things book box, which means I have to realize that I never catalogued the ones that were in the box when it returned to me. This one is good for another round.

I'm claiming this one from the latest round of the Biographies of Things bookbox.
Later: A mix of entertaining and provocative, this book attempts to provide an overview of the cultural history of "hipness" in the popular-culture "with it" sense - with branches into many different styles and ethnic influences. I got a kick out of the preface, which begins with "The proper way to read this book, of course, is from the back, checking to see if your name is in the index," suggesting a focus on "hip" as "wanting very much to be popular and/or trend-setting" - which is as good a starting definition as any, I suppose. That said, the book's examples range widely, veering back and forth as the country's own collective tastes swerved, were surprised, or rebelled. My favorite bits had to do with pop-culture nods to authors, musicians, and artists that I liked - which left me rather at sea over the sections dealing with entire sub-genres that I never really warmed to. Then again, those were the ones that I had more to learn from, so there's that!
The book covers the earliest days of the nation's history through the digital age - though as it came out in 2004 its views of the internet fall a bit shy of current overwhelming social-media influence.
