Synopsis:
Lyra Silvertongue is now a young woman in her second year as a Oxford student. When her daemon, Pantalaimon, witnesses a murder, they are forced to navigate their relationship in a way they could never have imagined, drawn into the complex and dangerous factions of a world that they had no idea existed.
Pulled along on his own journey is Malcolm Polstead; once a boy with a boat and a mission to save a baby from the flood, now a man with a strong sense of duty and a desire to do what is right.
Both Lyra and Malcolm must travel far beyond the edges of Oxford, across Europe and into Asia, in search of what is lost - a city haunted by daemons, a secret at the heart of a desert, and the mystery of the elusive Dust.

I didn't get into this one as I have done other books with Lyra. It's good to be going on adventures with Lyra at an older age but just a bit too melancholy story for me. Hoping for something a bit lighter in book 3.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
On its way to dolph1n.
Crikey, it's a big'un. Arrived safely thank you. May take a while to read.
I was disappointed with this. I found the first half exciting but then got bored. There were too many characters introduced for no apparent reason and I got confused as to what was going on.
I'm hoping for better things from the next one.

I have another book for poodlesister so I will hang on to this one and send them together.
Going to the next person in the ring.

Thanks for the book spiral book and the bonus books and card. I hope I enjoy it more than Ythan and Dolph1n did!

Well I agree this book is a little dark but I still enjoyed it and now I’m desperate to read Book 3.

Arrived safely :)
On it's way to the next participant!
Received today thank you T_richardson_x! The other book you sent has gone straight up to my son's room so I can't journal it this evening, but will do so soon. Thanks for that, and the book labels.
If I weren't travelling to London on Sunday I'd start this straight away, but it's an inconvenient size for the train so will read it in June instead. I'm looking forward to it, despite the mixed reviews.

It took me a bit longer to read The Secret Commonwealth than I expected. Partly this was because of general busy-ness (work went a bit crazy) but it also just didn't reel me in like previous books involving Lyra have done. As I reached towards the end I even found myself getting a bit bored. The story is really complicated and seems to meander all over the place - both literally and figuratively.
Pullman's writing and imagination is still wonderful however, even when his plot structure falters. I found the various explorations of how mental state can affect someone's relationship with their daemon particularly interesting. I'm still keen to read the last novel. This felt very much like a transition in Lyra's character as she moves into full adulthood, and I would foresee that book 3 should eventually bring her greater peace. I certainly hope so at least!
I've messaged shahrun and hope to get this copy off to her fairly soon. I'm going on holiday abroad soon though, so there is the possibility I'll have to wait until my return to post it on, sorry.
