Uh, I saw the cover and read the title months before this book was published and I knew it would be something special.  I'm glad it lived up to my expectations.  Also glad it went on to win the National Book Award!  Well deserved.  This book is so full of heart.  While also wringing my heart out quite a few times.  I love the meta level of this book.   I'm so glad Mr. Mott wrote this book (but of course, wish it wasn't a book that was necessary to exist in this painful world.)   Also, this is actually AN ENJOYABLE book about a writer on a book tour.  With just enough surrealism to make me wonder what the hell I just read.  I can't say enough about this one.
I'd set 'Hell of a Book' on the shelf next to/ this book has a similar spirit to:
Invisible Man - Ralph Ellison
The Sellout - Paul Beatty
We Cast A Shadow - Maurice Carlos Ruffin
Long Division - Kiese Laymon
The Confession of Copeland Cane - Keenan Norris
The Hate U Give - Angie Thomas
So many of these books use humor to temper the bitter truths of racism.  In an interview, Mr. Mott says “I wanted the reader to go underwater in the heavy sections, and then come up and get a breath of air and laugh and giggle while knowing they’re still swimming in the deep part of the ocean.”  (https://bittersoutherner.com/southern-perspectives/2021/jason-mott-wrote-one-hell-of-a-book)
